Creative family travel guides

We’ve travelled far and wide since having Otis in 2018 and Arlo in 2020. And we’ve put all that experience into a whole host of family travel guides, including itineraries, things to do with kids, and tips for travelling with a baby, toddler and beyond.

These are perfect if you’re keen to travel as a family but don’t want to sacrifice your own style and creativity. We think happy parents make for happy kids.

What’s creative family travel?

Parenting may have changed us in some ways, but our love for good food, indy bookshops, creativity and all the wonders of travel remain. And our trips have the same essence as when we were a couple – just with more family-friendly elements too.

Yes, we do visit classically kid-friendly places, like theme parks and children’s museums. But we also make sure to stay in the cool part of town to soak in those vibes too.

We go on wine tastings, but we seek out the ones with playgrounds. And we try incredible restaurants – just opting for lunch instead of dinner. For us, it’s all about balance between ours and the kids’ needs.

Essentially, we still look for style, creativity and beauty in everywhere we go.

And the places we stay as a family tend to be places we’d have stayed even before we had kids. You’ll still find hip hotels, charming guesthouses and glamping in our itineraries. Plus we’ve also found some wonderfully stylish family hotels along the way. So long as it has passion and creativity behind it, we’re in.

Our top family travel tips

We think the key to successful family travel is to adjust your expectations, and create a good balance between what makes you and the kids happy. Don’t try to pack too much in, and travel in a way that suits you personally rather than the way you think families “should” travel.

We’ve put together a guide to travelling with a baby with plenty of tips for making things run as smoothly as possible.

And here’s a guide to where to stay when travelling with a baby or kids. We particularly love doing home exchanges.

How to survive flying with kids

One of the things people worry about most when travelling with kids is the flights. See our survival guide to flying with a baby, which will help make things easier. Although, remember a lot of it is luck!

Family travel packing essentials

It can be pretty mind boggling knowing what to take on your family trips abroad and it’s tempting to overpack. Our golden rule is to remember that so long as there are kids living in the place you’re travelling to, you’ll likely be able to buy anything you forget. In other words, don’t bring two weeks’ worth of nappies!

We have packing lists for travelling with babies and toddlers, and here are some of our top family travel gear recommendations.

Is it worth travelling with kids?

On every trip we do, there’s a moment practically every day, normally mid-tantrum or sibling quarrel, where we ask ourselves if the travel is worth it. And while there’s no doubt it can be hard work, the answer for us is always yes. The highs are too good to miss.

Parenting is hard work wherever you are, and we’d prefer to be doing that while out exploring the world, rather than back at home.
