Road Trip Southern US - Sonder Savannah

Savannah is one of our favourite American cities – full of charm and with a creative thread that weaves through its streets, filled with galleries, shops and restaurants. It’s home to one of the country’s top art schools, after all.

Savannah is such a family-friendly destination that we’ve written a full post on things to do in Savannah with kids. And here’s an accompanying piece on the best family-friendly places to stay in Savannah. From hotels to Airbnbs and guesthouses, there are beautiful options for all tastes.

We went to Savannah as pat of our epic Southern USA road trip.

Best area to stay in Savannah with kids

First off, what’s the best area to stay in Savannah with kids?

Historic district

Our vote goes to the historic district as it’s convenient for all the main sights. It’s in the city centre and epitomises all the charm and history that Savannah is famous for – think picturesque squares, handsome buildings, and block after block of characterful cafes, restaurants and shops.

The area around Boughton Street and City Market is particularly convenient. Or being close to Forsyth Park would be a bonus if you have kids and want an easy (and gorgeous!) place for them to have a run around.

Starland

We are also big fans of the Starland District, a hip area, south of the city centre. There are lots of creative businesses to be found here, plus street art, and a generally hip, creative vibe. It’s not so convenient for the sights, but it’s a good option if you’re keen to experience local life. Don’t miss the Back in the Day bakery!

Tybee Island

If you’re looking to maximise your beach time then Tybee Island is still just 20 minutes from downtown Savannah. Stay here if you want to prioritise beach time over the city.

Fund things to do in Savannah - Sonder Apartment

Sonder Apartments – historic district

There are Sonder apartments throughout the historic district. The idea is they’re halfway between an Airbnb and a boutique hotel. You get the benefits of both: the style of a hotel and the space of an apartment (and cheaper than a hotel too).

Sonder have a few different apartment blocks in Savannah and we stayed at the one on Broughton Street, which is ideally located for all the main sights. Book your stay here.

Parlor on Park – Forsyth Park

The two-bedroom Parlor on Park is just a few steps from Forsyth Park and comes complete with an iconic wraparound veranda. You do get access to a heated pool – but it’s a fair way away in Tybee Island. Find best prices and book your stay now.

The Suites at Forsyth – Forsyth Park

This collection of suites surrounds a lovely central courtyard. And this two-bedroom option also comes with its own private deck. Just a stone’s throw from Forsyth Park, it’s a great option for families. And a great way to experience a stay in a beautiful 1870s Savannah townhouse. Check prices and book now.

Cottage on the Green – Tybee Island

You’ll be hard pressed to find somewhere cuter to stay than this quirky yellow cottage on Tybee Island. The inside is just as sweet with bright and eclectic vintage furnishings throughout. And it’s just a five-minute walk to the beach. The two-bed cottage sleeps six. Check prices and availability now.

Beachfront retreat – Tybee Island

For something extra special, stay right on the sand on Tybee Island. The three-bedroom luxury house is the perfect Savannah retreat if beachtime is top of your agenda. Plus it’s only 20 minutes from downtown, so you could easily sightsee during the day and return here for peaceful evenings by the water. Check prices and book now.

Kid-friendly hotels in Savannah

Kimpton Brice Savannah – historic district

Although we tend to avoid big chains, the Kimpton is one of the exceptions as they have a knack for creating gorgeous and unique spaces that capture a city’s essence. Our love for them began with the Kimpton Goodland in Santa Barbara on our California road trip.

And the Kimpton Brice in Savannah is another fine example. The pool area is a highlight – relax in the loungers while the kids play in the water. Splash out on a suite if you’d like a separate living area. Find the best prices and book now.

The Thunderbird Inn – edge of historic district

The Thunderbird Inn is a renovated roadside motel, consistently voted as one of the top ten best retro hotels in the USA. The hip, colourful hotel comes with lots of little bonuses, including complimentary doughnuts, coffee, lemonade and hot popcorn, which are all sure to please kids and adults alike.

It’s on the western boundary of the historic district and just a 10-minute walk from City Market. It’s one of the most family-friendly hotels in Savannah, GA. Book your stay now.

Hotel Indigo – City Market, historic district

The Hotel Indigo on Ellis Square is right next to City Market, making it an ideal location for your family stay in Savannah. It’s in a converted warehouse building, which provides a historic backdrop for the hotel’s modern, stylish design. Families are welcome and can stay in two-bed rooms or one of the hotel’s suites. Check availability and book your stay now.

If you’re travelling by RV, the Biltmore RV Park has a fun, retro vide and an antique and collectibles store on site. It’s the closest RV park to downtown and you can get into the centre via either bus or trolley.
