Frome is one of my favourite places to go shopping – it has the best selection of indie shops with barely a chain in sight. And the whole town is a pleasure to walk around with charming architecture and friendly vibes. Give me that over a shopping centre any day.
This is our guide to the best independent shops in Frome. Find everything from gifts to clothes to homeware. And expect pretty much everything to be ethically sourced.
Also see our guide to the best things to do in Frome and the best Frome restaurants.
The best independent Frome shops

Frome Independent Market
On the first Sunday of every month (aside from January and February), the whole town is transformed into a huge outdoor market – the Frome Independent – selling everything from farm-fresh food to locally made gifts. It’s the best market in the South West and people travel far and wide to visit. There’s usually live music and lots of food stalls too.
We particularly love going to the Christmas market in December – it’s part of our annual family Christmas break.
Best gift and homeware shops in Frome

Frome Hardware
Frome Hardware is one of those shops where they make the most mundane household tools into something beautiful and utterly desirable – I’ve never wanted a scrubbing brush before!

Solsken
Solsken sells Scandinavian goods, perfectly tapping into the newfound British affinity for all things hygge. The range includes soft furnishings, homewares and gifts, all sourced from Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.
Neighbour Utility
Neighbour Utility on Bridge Street is a modern lifestyle store showcasing well-made homewares, stationery and accessories from British designers and makers. It’s the kind of shop where you’ll want to take home everything – beautifully curated and full of design inspiration.
Best bookshops in Frome

Hunting Raven Bookshops
Everything a bookshop should be: independent, cosy and perfectly curated. We love Hunting Raven Bookshop on Cheap Street. They also do fun literary events.

Frome Bookshop
For second-hand books, go to the Frome Bookshop on King Street. A lovely little haven of books.
Best clothes shops in Frome
Assembly
Assembly sells a handpicked selection of menswear and accessories that are mostly made in Britain with a few bits from Europe. It’s a beautifully stylish collection and shop.

Deadly is the Female
One of Frome’s best vintage-style shops, and the one with the best name, is Deadly is the Female, a glamorous boutique on Catherine Hill selling a gorgeous range of vintage-style dresses.
Poot Emporium
Poot Emporium is an amazing vintage shop on Catherine Hill, selling both second hand and new clothing and books. They have their own range of clothing and also stock local and ethical designers. Other great vintage shops are Dandy Lion and Lark Vintage.
Truly Sopel
At Truly Sopel on Stony Street, everything is designed and made in-house by the designer herself. The boudoir-style boutique lingerie store has fun designs, often using upcycled materials.
Daines Atelier
Daines Atelier creates upcycled and vintage-inspired clothing made from old textiles. Every piece is individual and sustainable, blending heritage fabrics with modern cuts – a style that epitomises Frome’s creative spirit.
Best florists and plant shops in Frome

Pilea
Named after the money plant, Pilea is known for its creative workshops as well as its gorgeous selection of plants. See their calendar for a full schedule of events, including things like terrarium and wreath workshops.

Bramble and Wild
Bramble and Wild is a flower shop known for its romantic, rustic vibe. Like Pilea, they also offer workshops.
