Caterina is the owner of Quinta del Pacheca in Portugal’s Douro Valley. I went there back in September and fell in love with the region’s port. Caterina was one of the inspirations for my piece on why stories taste better. Between chatting about port and exploring her gorgeous vineyard and hotel, I found a moment to interview her for Superpower.
If you could have a superpower what would it be?
When where you happiest?
Every time I get feedback from my guests.
What’s the love of you life?
What I do.
What’s your greatest fear?
To work until I’m 70 or 80, still trying to fill the hotel every day.
What trait do you admire in others?
Honesty and friendship.
What trait to you most like in yourself?
I like to help people. People feel well with me.
What trait do you most dislike in yourself?
I can be a bit of a workaholic and not give enough time for myself.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Do not be naieve. Think twice first.
If you could travel in time where would you go?
I’d come here to this vineyard because I love this place. Perhaps I’d go back 15 years. Things are quite difficult now. The government need to learn to think with us. Instead of building hotels with 70 rooms, they need to develop more entertainment. People come here only for the wine. They stay a day and then they leave. But we have so much more – olives, chesnuts – it’s beautiful.
Have you ever seen something you can’t explain?
Reactions from other people.
