Last updated on January 4, 2024

We spend a lot of time in Devon and are huge fans of its gorgeous coastline, wild beaches, rolling hills, cute market towns, Devonshire teas, pasties, and everything else that makes it one of the UK’s most charming holiday spots.

We’ve curated a round-up of Devon’s best Airbnbs. From the coastal towns of Ilfracombe, Paignton and Salcombe to the countryside of Dartmoor, there are Devon Airbnbs to suit a range of budgets and style. All are special places to stay and we have a particular focus on unique accommodation, including shepherd’s huts, containers and cabins – there’s even a castle!

We know Salcombe very well, so have also put together a guide to the best Salcombe holiday homes, and the best things to do in Salcombe.

Also see our guides to Airbnb Cornwall, the best Airbnbs in the UK, and plenty more, including Bristol, the Lake District and Brighton. See all our Airbnb guides here.

Best Airbnbs in South Devon and the English Riviera

Sweetsides Shepherds Hut, South Pool

This beautiful handcrafted Shepherd’s hut with a wood burning hot tub, overlooks the Salcombe Estuary, and is just 2.5 miles from Salcombe town. The hut has been lovingly crafted from reclaimed materials salvaged from the working farm and is set within an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Enjoy cosy evenings spent under starry skies warming yourselves by the fire or in the hot tub, and spend your days paddling down the beautiful estuary with kayaks you can hire from the owners. One of the best of Airbnb Salcombe.

What the guests say: “We had such a relaxing stay at Becky’s hut. The views from the bed were gorgeous in the morning and it was so nice to have the kitchen space to spend time in in the evening (whilst the rain was pouring!). The bedroom was lovely and cosy despite the terrible weather. The hut and kitchen are just as nice as you would expect from the photos. Recommend walking the local area- walked to Salcombe on one day and to the local pub in the evening for dinner- both lovely walks without too much planning!”

There are two more properties on site (two barns for 18 and 12 people) both in a similar style.

What the guests say: “We loved our time in Freya and Felicity’s barn – we found it easily and the setting was fabulous. Kitted out brilliantly and very stylishly, it’s a great home from home. An easy walk into the centre of Salcombe along the estuary, yet far enough out to feel secluded with views of the fields around you. Can’t recommend this place enough!”

The Artist’s Mews, Totnes

Beautifully designed by Gemma Dudgeon Interiors, this peaceful pied-à-terre in Totnes feels spacious thanks to the expansive skylights and vaulted ceilings. The interior is elevated by the bold and colourful walls with fun patterns adding a final flourish.

What the guests say: “This place was wonderful – we felt instantly at home and the bed was so comfortable it felt like being in a high end hotel. The flat is perfectly positioned in the centre of Totnes for the shops in the Narrows, great coffee at the Hairy Barista and exploring the rest of the town, castle and beyond. The decor is beautiful, stylish and finished to a very high standard – definitely a cut above your average studio apartment!

There’s even a decent selection of books to keep you entertained if you don’t fancy watching a movie. Gemma was great to communicate with – speedy, informative, friendly and accommodating. We loved the place and would definitely stay here again and highly recommend to others.”

Wildflower Cabin, near Totnes

This beautiful, bright, handcrafted cabin is set in a secluded meadow within the rolling hills of the Devonshire countryside. Surrounded by nature, the birds and the bees, it’s the perfect place to unplug and relax, while still being 12 minutes’ drive from Totnes. The whole place is solar powered and the shower is outside (but hot!).

What the guests say: “Oh what a special and magical place! I had the best time and it was simply the most perfect way to reground myself after what’s been a rather peculiar year. The cabin is absolutely beautiful and really cosy when the little fire is going and the world outside is growing dark. What with a great selection of teas, incredible views and landscape to roam, a fabulous bookshelf, a little fire, and a very comfy bed in the rafters, I had everything I could possibly have wanted.

As for the shower…well, having an outdoor shower on a cold Christmas Day morning was not exactly something I had on my bucket list, but having eventually plucked up the courage to do so, I am now thoroughly converted! Thank you Freddy and Helena for creating such a lovely and wholesome place, and I cannot wait to return.”

What the guests say: “I cannot rave enough about this fantastic and unique place! Just perfect. Jan’s communication was prompt, friendly and super helpful beforehand and throughout our whole stay. The house is beyond amazing. Yes, there are 100 steps up from the road, so do be prepared, but that’s why you have a gorgeous view of the cove and fields from this stunning treetop home.

We had breakfast on the balcony (yes, even in December/January!) in amongst the sound of birds and the nearby stream. We had buzzards flying over us in the day and a tawny owl hooting to us most nights as we relaxed by the fire. The house is very clean and contains everything you need – Jan is incredibly thoughtful about supplies, linens etc – the best host you could wish for.”

Unwind in a boat seat on the deck over the babbling Barberry Brook — or lounge upstairs in the sitting room, listening to a vinyl played on your record player while the wood burner keeps you warm. The cottage is part of Fingals, a collection of self-catering properties with shared facilities including a heated indoor swimming pool, gym, tennis court and sauna. It’s ideal if you’re looking for a Devon Airbnb with a pool.

What the guests say: “The folly is completely magical. We were expecting it to be beautiful but it surpassed our expectations. The sound of the stream was delightful and we loved being able to see it from the bed! Every touch was full of unique charm. We used the pool every day and it was wonderful to swim about under such lush foliage. The sauna was excellent too. The kitchen was much better equipped than many Airbnb we’ve stayed in.

Location wise you couldn’t get luckier. We walked into Dittisham along a pretty footpath – the easy going terrain was welcome as we are 8 months pregnant. Sheila and Richard were perfect hosts, really helpful and gave good advice about where to eat which we took up. There is also an extensive dvd library for rainy evenings which we made use of. All in all a real treasure. We shall return!”
